Madison Sweep Top Field Hockey Honors
The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID)
announced the 2009 All-State Field Hockey Team (University
Division) with members of the Virginia Cavaliers taking the
three top honors for the season.
Paige Selenski was named the VaSID Player of the Year while
teammate Charlotte van den Broek earned Rookie of the Year
honors and head coach Michele Madison was tabbed as the Coach of
the Year. The Cavaliers led all schools with eight
student-athletes named to one of the two teams while James
Madison had five honorees.
2009 VaSID University Division All-State Field Hockey Team
Selenski, a consensus first-team All-American, was the NFHCA
South Region Player of the Year after earning All-ACC honors and
leading the Cavaliers in scoring. A member of the USA Junior
National Team, Selenski ranked in the top-10 nationally in
scoring.
Van den Broek was a key part of the Cavalier defense that ranked
top-10 nationally in scoring defense. A second-team All-South
Region member, van den Broek helped Virginia to 12 shutouts,
including a 1-0 victory over eventual NCAA champion North
Carolina, the only time the Tar Heels were shut out all season.
Madison directed the Cavaliers back to the NCAA semifinals for
the first time since 1998. Virginia was ranked in the top-10
throughout the season, boasting a goals-against average of under
1.00 and a scoring margin of just under 2.00.
VaSID was formed in 1983, and is comprised of sports information
professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and
independent institutions from the state of Virginia. The purpose
of the organization is to promote college athletics at all
four-year institutions. For more information, please visit the
