State Sports Information Directors
Present Football Awards, Name All-State Teams
HARRISONBURG, Va., April 15, 2010 – Three schools were
represented Thursday in the announcement of the top awards for
the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association
All-State Division I Football Team for the 2009 season.
2009 VaSID University Division Football All-State Team
Honored were Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams as state
offensive player of the year and rookie of the year, James
Madison defensive end Arthur Moats as state defensive player
of the year, and William & Mary’s Jimmye Laycock as state
coach of the year.
Sports information directors from throughout the state took
part in the voting which in addition to the top individual
awards named all-state first and second teams on offense and
defense.
Williams during 13 games during the 2009 season ran for 1,720
yards and a team- and Atlantic Coast Conference-record 21
touchdowns. The redshirt freshman was first-team All-ACC, the
league’s rookie of the year and the nation’s leading freshman
rusher. He also caught 16 passes for 180 yards and a score
and was named ACC rookie of the week six times.
Williams and former Virginia Tech standout quarterback Michael
Vick (1999) are the only freshmen to receive a VaSID football
state player of the year award. The organization started
naming all-state teams and state players of the year in 1983.
Moats won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player
in the Football Championship Subdivision. The senior took
part in 90 tackles including 42 unassisted, a national-best
23.5 for loss and 11 quarterback sacks. He was the Colonial
Athletic Association defensive player of the year and
first-team All-America by Associated Press, the American
Football Coaches Association, the Walter Camp Foundation and
The Sports Network.
Laycock, who also was state coach of the year in 1986 and
1990, led William & Mary to an 11-3 overall record and to the
semifinals of the FCS playoffs during the 2009 season. The
Tribe tied its season record for victories and had the FCS’s
No. 2 defense. Laycock during the season reached the 200
plateau for career victories.
William & Mary led the all-state voting with eight first-team
selections and 10 overall choices among the 50 players
recognized. Virginia Tech also had 10 overall selections,
including three first-team honorees. Richmond had players
named to nine positions, James Madison seven, Liberty five,
Virginia and Norfolk State three, Hampton two and Old Dominion
one.
Three Richmond players repeated as first-team all-state
honorees, including junior linebacker Eric McBride, who was
named for the third straight time, senior offensive guard Matt
McCracken and junior cornerback Justin Rogers. Five players
made the first team after receiving second-team 2007
recognition, including Moats, Norfolk State senior safety
Terrell Whitehead, James Madison senior offensive guard Dorian
Brooks, William & Mary senior tight end Rob Varno, and
Richmond senior offensive tackle Michael Silva. Whitehead was
a first-team choice in 2007.

professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and
