Mays, Bayse Headline All-State
(College Division) Softball Team
DANVILLE, Va. – Lynchburg College’s Christy Mays was selected
the Virginia State (College Division) Player of the Year by
the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) on Friday.
Additionally, Roanoke College head coach Alan Bayse was chosen
as the state coach of the year.

Division All-State Softball Team
Mays, a senior from Amherst, VA, played first base for the
Hornets, where she earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
She held a batting average of .403 and tallied 36 RBIs on the
season. Mays was also an All-State first team selection at
first base.
Bayse led Roanoke to their sixth ODAC Championship and their
sixth NCAA appearance in the last seven years. His Maroons
posted a 33-12 overall record and were ranked as high as 13
nationally in 2005.
Roanoke’s Lyndsi Craig and Virginia Wesleyan’s Becky Sowell
were the first team all-state honorees at the pitching
position. Craig was named the ODAC Pitcher of the Year, while
hurling to a 1.53 ERA and a 14-3 record. Sowell was 13-4 on
the year, while posting a 1.41 ERA and earning first team All-ODAC
honors.
Lynchburg’s Brittany Edelen was selected to the first team at
the catcher position. Edelen batted .419, had 37 RBIs and
earned first team all-conference and all-region honors. At
second base, Robin O’Connor from Roanoke received the first
team nod. O’Connor was a first team All-ODAC selection after
belting seven doubles and 30 RBIs on the year.
The first teamer at third base was Bridgewater’s Lindsay
Ware. Ware was also on the first team All-ODAC squad and
batted .327 with nine doubles and 35 RBIs on the year.
Rounding out the infield is all-state shortstop Brooke Barker
from Emory & Henry. Barker batted .385 with a .495 slugging
percentage. She was also a first team All-ODAC selection.
In the outfield, Ferrum’s Mary Greenway, Bridgewater’s
Jennifer Hall and Lauren Lancaster from Lynchburg were first
team selections. Greenway led the NCAA in stolen bases with
50, batted .437 and earned All-USA South Conference honors.
Hall was the ODAC Rookie of the Year after hitting .384 and
leading the ODAC with five triples. Lancaster was selected to
the All-ODAC first team after smashing three home runs and
posting a .328 batting average.
At the utility position, Shenandoah’s Tana Bartek was
recognized as a first team all-state performer. She batted
.362 with 17 RBIs, earning first team All-USA South honors.
At the designated player position, Lynchburg’s Caroline
Cubbage earned first team honors. She was a first team All-ODAC
honoree, after posting a .413 batting average, which included
seven doubles and three triples.
The first team included 10 players from the ODAC, with
Lynchburg leading the way with four Hornets selected. The USA
South had two representatives on the all-state first team.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors
