CNU Wins 2010-11 VaSID
College All-Sports Survey
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- For
the third year in a row and the seventh time in the last 11
years, Christopher Newport University took home first place
honors in the Virginia Sports Information Directors
Association All-Sports College Division Survey.
The Captains and Lady
Captains won a blistering 77.9% of their contests in 2010-11
as they combined for a 267-75-2 record. This makes the second
time that CNU has won three years in a row, also pulling that
feat from 2000-03.
The 77.9% winning
percentage is the highest percentage in the last 11 years of
this survey that combines the won-loss records of all 27
non-NCAA Division I schools in the state. CNU held the
previous best percentage set last year as they won 72% of its
contests.
The University of Mary
Washington edged out Washington & Lee for second place in the
overall survey as the Eagles won 63.5% of their events, while
the Generals won 63.3%. Coming in fourth place was the
Apprentice School (60.9%) while Roanoke College rounded out
the top five winning 60.1%.
On the men’s side, CNU won
73.1% of its games while Southern Virginia University finished
second winning 66.4% of its games marking the highest finish
for SVU in the survey. Mary Washington took third place
(63.6%), while Randolph-Macon was fourth (61.8%) and
Hampden-Sydney was fifth (59.9%).
On the women’s side, CNU
ran away from the state winning 81.8% of its contests as a
pair of Lady Captain teams (basketball and softball) took
third and second respectively in their NCAA Division III
tournaments. Following CNU was Washington & Lee (71%),
Apprentice School (66.7%), Roanoke (64.5%) and Bridgewater
(63.5%).
CNU and Lynchburg shared
the conference championship winning honors with eight, while
CNU had 14 teams earn NCAA tournament bids followed by
Southern Virginia with seven teams earning United States
Collegiate Athletic Association tournament bids.
