Van Sickler Headlines College All-State Baseball Team

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) released their 2010 Baseball College Division All-State team today. Shenandoah junior, Greg Van Sickler (Stephenson, Va.), was named Player of the Year while Shenandoah’s head coach, Kevin Anderson, brought home Coach of the Year honors. Lynchburg freshman, Brock Shifflet (Richmond, Va.), was named Rookie of the Year.

2010 VaSID College Division All-State Baseball Team

Van Sickler, a junior from Stephenson, Va. who had a .412 batting average along with a 3.49 ERA in 87.2 innings pitched, is a 2010 VaSID first team selection as both a pitcher and utility player. He was named the 2010 ABCA South Region Player of the Year, 2010 USA South Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 2010 first team All-American by D3baseball.com. Van Sickler played four different positions (pitcher, DH, first base and left field) at the 2010 USA South Tournament leading Shenandoah to its first ever tournament championship.

Shenandoah head coach Kevin Anderson led the Hornets to a 38-10 record with USA South Tournament and South Region Championships. The Hornets finished the season as the No. 6 team in the ABCA poll and No. 7 by D3baseball.com.

Shifflet, a freshman from Richmond, Va., posted a .397 batting average with 56 hits, 30 runs and 36 RBI. He was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-Conference and Third Team All-Region. Shifflet was also named the Lynchburg College Male Rookie of the Year.

Eleven different programs were represented on the 2010 VaSID All-State Team, led by Shenandoah with five selections. Following are the selections for first and second teams.

VaSID was formed in 1983, and is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of Virginia.
