Kalkstein Named
Player of the Year in Women's Lacrosse; JMU Picks Up
Rookie & Coach Honors

The Virginia
Sports Information Directors’ Association (VaSID)
released their 2010 All-State teams as well as the
Player, Rookie, and Coach of the Year for women’s
lacrosse for this season. This year’s ballot saw
Virginia’s Brittany Kalkstein earn Player of the Year
honors while JMU took home both the Rookie of the Year
and Coach of the Year honors in Casey Ancarrow and
Shelly Klaes-Bawcombe, respectively.
2010 VaSID University Division Women's Lacrosse
All-State Team
Virginia led all schools with eight selections to the
two teams, with four on the first team and four on the
second team. James Madison also had four on the first
team while placing two on the second team. William &
Mary was honored with three players named to the first
team while one student at the College was named to the
second team. Richmond claimed the final first team
spot; the Spiders also had a student-athlete on the
second team. Virginia Tech had two athletes named to
the second team, while Longwood and George Mason each
had one such honoree.
Kalkstein, a Tewaaraton Trophy and Honda Sports Award
Finalist, earned first-team All-American honors in
2010. She broke ACC and UVa career records for draw
controls en route to her second All-American citation.
The 2007 National, ACC, and VaSID Freshman of the
Year, Kalkstein was named to the 2010 All-ACC and ACC
All-Tournament Team. The Maryland native was named the
national player of the week twice in 2010.
Ancarrow, the CAA Rookie of the Year, played a
significant role in the return of the Dukes to the
NCAA Tournament and the national top-10. An All-CAA
second team and CAA All-Rookie Team member, Ancarrow
ranked third on team in points and assists. She
earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors four times and
was named the CAA Player of the Week once.
Klaes-Bawcombe helped the Dukes to a 17-3 record that
included a 7-0 record vs. state teams. The
womenslacrosse.com national Coach of the Year, the
JMU mentor also earned CAA Coach of the Year honors.
JMU advanced to NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and won
CAA championship, setting school season records for
wins (17) and winning percentage (.850) and earned a
number five seed (second-highest in the program's
history) in the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes were
ranked eighth in final IWLCA poll. Klaes-Bawcombe also
coached the South Team to a 7-4 win in the North-South
All-Star Game.
VaSID was formed in 1983, and is comprised of sports information
professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and
independent institutions from the state of Virginia. The purpose
of the organization is to promote college athletics at all
