Women’s Leadership Conference Highlights Appalachia

     Ferrum College’s 2003 Women’s Leadership Conference will feature speakers and performers that exemplify various roles of women in the Appalachian region. The two-day conference, beginning on March 24, will include workshops and panel sessions, as well as traditional arts and crafts. The conference seeks to encourage both men and women to take on leadership roles in their lives.

     Marilou Awiakta, a Cherokee/Appalachian writer from Tennessee, will deliver the featured address. A dessert reception and book signing will follow. Patricia Johnson (pictured left) ’72, a national poetry slam champion from Elk Creek, Va., will perform after lunch on Monday. This year’s keynote speaker is Angela Thomas ’90, a resident of Jonesville, Va. and teacher at Lee County High School.


     Banjo player Sue Massek, of Lexington, Ky., opens the conference with a 2:00 p.m. educational workshop on Women in Traditional Music on Monday, March 24. An 8:15 p.m. performance will be free and open to the public.

     On March 25, there will be panel sessions on women’s roles in diversity, activism, business, and public office. At 11:15 p.m., Thomas will deliver the keynote address, followed by a luncheon featuring a performance by Johnson. After Awiakta speaks at 7:00 p.m., she will sign copies of her books during a dessert reception.
