ANNOYANCE CALLS

INTENTIONAL ANNOYANCE OF ANY PERSON BY USE OF THE TELEPHONE IS PROHIBITED BY LAW. THE MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR VIOLATION IS A FINE OF $1,000.00 OR IMPRISONMENT FOR ONE YEAR OR BOTH.

HOW TO HANDLE OBSCENE OR HARASSING CALLS

IF YOU RECEIVE OBSCENE, HARASSING OR THREATENING CALLS, FOLLOW THESE SUGGESTIONS:

  1. HANG UP AT THE FIRST OBSCENE WORD OR IF THE CALLER DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING THE SECOND TIME YOU SAY HELLO.

  1. GIVE NO INFORMATION UNTIL THE CALLER HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

3. IF CALLS PERSIST, CONTACT COLLEGE POLICE AT 4255.

FRAUD

VIRGINIA LAW AND CAMPUS POLICIES PROHIBIT THE FRAUDULENT USE OF A CALLING CARD OR TELEPHONE BILLING NUMBER, OR OBTAINING OR ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN TELEPHONE SERVICE WITH INTENT TO AVOID. THOSE IN VIOLATION OF THIS POLICY ARE SUBJECT TO CAMPUS JUDICIAL ACTION AS WELL AS CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

TELEPHONE SERVICES ARE NOT FREE

THINK TWICE ABOUT USING A NUMBER RECEIVED FROM SOMEONE WHO SAYS IT CAN BE USED FOR FREE LONG-DISTANCE CALLS. REMEMBER, ANYTHING YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE PHONE CALL.

FURTHER, IF YOU ARE CHARGED WITH FRAUD, YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED UNDER CAMPUS POLICIES, AS WELL AS STATE STATUES. IF CONVICTED YOU WILL FACE LARGE FINES, A POSSIBLE PRISON SENTENCE AND/OR EVEN GET SUSPENDED FROM COLLEGE. DONíT RUIN YOUR COLLEGE CAREER BY COMMITTING FRAUD.
